An original, one-of-one mixed-media portrait exploring stillness, self-possession and the quiet power of turning inward. Set against a richly textured burgundy background, a Black woman rests with her eyes closed as pale, smoke-like forms move around her. Her expansive natural hair anchors the composition while a sweeping gold arc rises above her. Layers of acrylic, oil pastel, gold leaf and printed paper create dimension and texture that shift with the light.

The title came after the painting was complete. She felt neither passive nor waiting, simply self-contained. Whatever she is listening to belongs to her.
